Scott Base Polar Plunge
May 3, 1998 ~ 1:00 - 3:00 PM

Several times each year our friends at the New Zealand facilty, Scott Base, invite us over to participate in the Polar Plunge. This event was our "Sunset Swim". Sunset was actually a few weeks ago, but bad weather prevented us from engaging in this maniacal behavior until now.

Why do we do it? I'm not sure. Perhaps its knowing that you could die if there weren't people around to help you once you enter the water. Or maybe it's a test of one's internal strengths, something that can only be appreciated on a personal lever. Whatever the reason, most people have a positive experience and heartily cheer on each swimmer as they prepare to plunge! Thankyou to everyone who allowed me to photograph their antics. I hope you enjoy the pictures.
